Transformer Oil Containment Sump Pump Control

Our company uses transformer oil containment pits for transformer oil spill containment. We have a sump pump in the pit to pump out rain water, but we would not want to pump oil. We use the transformer oil level gauge contact and an auxiliary AC relay to disable the sump pump. I would be interested to hear what other companies are doing.

We have a drain in the area of the transformer for getting rid of excess water. At the same time we have oil sensors within this drain, when they sense oil we shut the drain trap so no oil leaks down through the drain (hydro plants).

There is sump-pump in the market that allows pumping the water and shutting off if the sensor detects oil trace. Here is how the oil/sump-pump works: “Sensing is accomplished by measuring the dielectric constant of the medium at the sensor. To prevent cycling the pump off and on the sensor has two sense points one to control the water level for pump turn on and one to control the point to turn the pump off. The separation of these two points are controlled by two independent sensors that connect to a logic circuit “
