With two steam turbine generators(150MW each), sudden arc furnace related load additions of the order of 80MW, 40MW have to be fed, in islanded mode (no grid). Total load say 200-250MW.

i)With boiler rampup rates of the order of 4% per minute or 10% per minute, how the sudden loads of the above order can be catered to by the generators?

ii) For a transient frequency/speed simulation, which is normally s done for only 10-20sec, how the above situation, can be simulated?

iii) Can the above simulation be done with the std IEEE-Gen steam turbine gov model?

I think you can plan on significant frequency/voltage transients if you pickup 40 MW on a 200 MW system. The boiler obviously can't respond instantaneously. The turbine can respond fairly quickly by sucking steam out of the steam drum/boiler/superheater. But not fast enough to avoid frequency dip.

I'm sure it can be simulated. Flicker/frequency studies are routinely done for arc furnace installations.

I assume the furnace is equipped with some type of static var compensation.

Thanks DPC for the response.

1)You mentioned it should be possible to simulate.

Is it possible with the std models of governors considered for Transient stability studies? (to include boiler rampup rates)

Or is it with any modifications of any parameters of these control models, (say governor time constants etc.)

2)For any bolier controls to reflect, normally the simulation shall be in terms of minutes (say 30mts or so). Is a simulation of this nature required for the problem?(with low ramp rates associated with boilers)

3) Any references on the (1) above, that you can suggest?

4) In addition, is there a way to simulate the operation of turbine by pass valve (or ramp downs), with the standard gov model (say by changing the time constants etc.)?

Thanks
