Translation of CatiaV5 version 17 to version 16

I would really appreciate some help with my problem with downstream translation. I have a few version 17 parts that needs to be translated to version 16. I used the Utility function, selected Downward Compatibility,inputted selected file, sent file to target directory and obtained the following error message: "cannot open document due to data storage initialization". Am I missing a step?
Please help as soon as possible.

I hate to break it to you, but downward compatibility, will not retain your tree and part creation history. You will be left with a solid with no intelligence.

Unless you are ok with that, try to upgrade the R16 system to R17.
