Hi,

I would like to ask on how to check if the tread is stiff/thick enough as diaphragm? Please see images below per AISC Design Guide 34.

Thanks,

I've been dying to get my hands on that design guide...

1) Model it somehow, by hand or computer, to work out the demands on the treads and expected response under load.

2) Check the capacity of the treads relative to the demands, considering the usual issues of material yielding, plate buckling, and deflection.

I don't think there are any rules of thumb about this, and it really requires an FEA. That said, the treads themselves are usually very stiff in their own plane and the connection of the tread to the stringer is the limiting thing often. Also if you are generating vierdendeel, the stringers need minor axis bending stiffness.

Oh yeah... you're toast you unethical monster. You are, however, safely on the KootK Christmas card distribution list.
