I am required to install trim mat on a steep slope to protect it from erosion and allow plant growth. The specs describe installing the mat paralell to the slope. My contractor--who is very experienced--says it makes more sense to install it perpendicular to the slope, like shingles on a roof. I talked to another of my regular contractors who is also very experienced, and he agrees with the first contractor--perpendicular to the slope from the bottom up like shingles. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

In areas of broad sheet flow, the mats may be placed vertically or horizontally. In areas of concentrated flow, the mats should be placed vertically.

The orientation of the mats will depend on the specifics of your layout. You may be areas with broad sheet flow and areas with concentrated flow.

install generally paralell with flow and overlapping the downstream fabric similar to shingles.
