Trimming construction lines 1

When I started a drawing, I could trim my construction lines using fillet or chamfer. As my drawing progressed, the ability to trim with fillet or chamfer the construction lines has ceased. I can trim with trim but nothing else. This has happened before on other computers using other versions of AutoCAD including LT.

What am I doing, please?

Hi,

maybe your *.dwt has an error.

Try z-axis = 0
Do you use high coordinates?
Do you have the wcs with the top view?

Which Acad-version are you running? Attach the *.dwg:

Thanks for the interest

Its not a 3D problem and it occurs only in some drawings. I attach a drawing that I am currently working on which will not allow me to fillet and I will attach a drawing on the next post which will allow me to fillet. I have both open at the same time and I am switching between windows so it is drawing specific. Also, I have had this trouble with 2005, 2008 and 2007 LT. I think it may be the size of the drawing or number of blocks (I use many).

Is the attached drawing X-referenced or a block drawing?

hemis,
I have converted the file to ACAD2006. Then I did use "_regenall".
The trim command worked well.
The drawing has high negative values. Move all objekts into the positive coordinates. ACAD is not a mathmatic mastermind...

Didn't look at the files, but are you using lines or polylines? Always make sure that the objects are in the correct coordinates. Example, a line with a different Z value on both ends will turn out messed up unless you are purposely using the Z's. Same as for polylines.

Thanks guys.

First: The drawing is a root drawing. Other drawings will access it when its complete. Its not an ex-ref. I do, however, draw solely using blocks and poly-lines. I edit all my blocks with the Reference Editor - not Block Editor. And I often copy blocks from other drawings. Maybe one of my blocks is infecting my drawings.

Two: I moved the origin and made all co-ord's positive. Still no joy.

Three: Regen made no difference.

Four: If the lines were in 3D space, then trim would not work either, and that is fine. Its something to do with the make-up of the construction-line or the trim commands in fillet and chamfer.

Have you all managed to fillet the lines. If so, then the problem is with my machine. Please let me know. As I say, I have experienced this on all the machines I have worked on with many different versions. Its definitely something real.

Any idea of the commands pertaining to trimming and construction lines. I am wondering if I or my cyber-friend, Jeff, is setting some parameter accidentally.

Cheers

P.S.

I just tried it again and when I select the first line to chamfer or fillet, the line is recognised and asks for the second line to corner. When I select the second line, it is not recognised and I get stuck in the function until I escape. It doesn't see the line.

I had no trouble using fillet on the roof peaks on the house elevations views - the cyan and tan lines on "Text" and "Area Polyline" layers..

IFRs

Was you able to fillet two construction lines in my drawing.

Cheers

Please help me find the construction lines.

Hemis-
I was able to fillet after doing what Exxit recommended - moving objects nearer the origin. NOT moving the origing(via UCS) as you mentioned, that doesn't affect the AutoCAD calculation problem.

Oh - those big yellow lines? Same problem. Trim and Extend work but have to try real hard. Moving them to near zero elevation fixes the issues.

Sorry chaps.

I have drawn two xlines through the origin but it still does not work. I am sure AutoCAD is more than capable of working with negative signs. Anyway. I have tried it in a drawing that covers 1 square kilometre in cyber and the problem does not exist. I am sure it is to do with the number of entities in my drawing.

I am going to delete everything, purge and then try again.

P.S.

I deleted the whole drawing, and it did not work. I use quick select to select the whole drawing and it still did not work. I deleted the all the layouts and it still did not work. I closed the drawing and re-opened it and now it works. I can trim an xline using fillet. It is to do with the number of entities (12000) and blocks (338).

I think I need to pay my subscription and get AutoDesk to sort this one. It has happened many times.

Well others also could not fillet xlines in your original drawing, it's not just your setup.
Also, it wasn't the negative numbers that were a problem, it was the y=195,000,000 (for me anyway)

Experienced a problem like this when working with an drawing created using ADT. It turned out that some of the lines I was trying to fillet (or join to a polyline) had a VERY small Z-coordinate value - on the order of 0.00001. I managed to discover this after setting Units to Decimal with precision as far to the right of the decimal point as possible, then listing each entity. If the lines have a small Z-coordinate at one end, then they are not on the X-Y plane and Fillet, Chamfer, or Pedit|Join will not work.
