triple square fastener

We are in the process of manufacturing a part that has a triple square (XZN spline) in one end of the shaft. We are looking for specifications or standards relating to this type of wrench spline. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? I find alot of tools that match the spline but no one has technical information.

Triple-square drive is sometimes known as 'double-hexagon,' or '12-point' An aerospace definition of this drive is given in AS870 available from

Thank you for your reply. We have already investigated the AS870 from SAE. The bi-hex has 120 degree angles and the triple square has 90 degree angles. We find the 90 degree angle splines on Germany automotive equipment.

Try reaching someone on the SAE committee that wrote AS870. If they were doing their job right, they should have researched for any existing similar standards early in the process.

If the XZN is used on German cars then there is a DIN standard for them, guaranteed. (But I can't find it.)
