Trouble uniting something I've done countless times! 3

Hello All

Please can someone put me out of my misery. The attached file consiits of 3 solid bodies that I would like to unite, only it returns an error saying either non-manifold solid, no problem thinks I, just offset both faces so it intersects then unite. But no it then returns an error along the lines of "through face does not intersect path of tool"? which is clearly does. Never had that before. I've tried all sort but to no avail, so any help, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

i managed to create one solid body, indeed not so easy. I did encoutered the same problems with the unite function as you did, which is very strange.

The model is created in NX6.

I think the culprit is the 'thicken' section. I put a datum plane on the end of the tube and another on the 4 lobed extrude, then offset the faces of the middle section and trimmed them back to the datum planes - then it united with no problems.

i took a different approach in NX4, but at the end i could use 2 unites to create one solid body (see model).

Btw, these are nice shapes to do modeling on.

It were the faces on the end of middle section!

Sometimes we used to offset and trim back the end faces in cases like this, but it is best to avoid that whenever you can. Now that we have replace face and that seems to provide an ideal solution.

Here I just used replace face and hit the unite. It passes examine geometry. And it is always best to check when you're fixing these kinds of problems.

Yours was an otherwise perfectly fine model so it went off without a hitch. I imagine that the only problem was slight continuity (tangency) differences between the surfaces of the mid portion and the ends which meant that flat faces weren't produced when the sheets were thickened.
