Hi All,

Working for a company with plenty of experience in wood, steel and concrete. Just looking for some suggestions as to how to begin designing for aluminum structures... in particular temporary structures. I suppose I am just looking for a good book.

I am in Toronto, Canada - looking for a Canadian standards book, or at least with a limit states design approach.

Thanks, hope to hear back!

Of Canadian references, this is probably the one to have: Link. As is often the case with Canadian books, the trick is finding a copy at a reasonable price.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Definitely get KootK's reference. Canadian aluminum design is a bit different from US, and more closely resembles the European codes. US references like the Aluminum Association won't be as helpful.

Thanks guys this is great feedback.

I have the related CSA (s1571-05)... Do you know if it is referenced in Denis Beaulieu's book?

I agree - why $300 for a book!?

Yes, Beaulieu's book is based on the CSA standard (or is the standard based on his book?) I got it for $135+tax from presses polytechnique two years ago, but I just checked and it looks like its not available any more.

I find that I do just fine working with a good US aluminum text book and the CSA code. You know the drill: the text explains the behavior fundamentals and the code hits the nuts and bolts of the required calculations. It's nice when those things are in perfect sync but it's not a huge deal if they're not. I don't actually have my own copy of Breaulieu's book because:

1) Could never find one cheap enough.
2) The latest edition seems to be 2006 which is getting a bit dated.
3) I believe the author to be retired with no updates to the text being picked up by other parties.
