From what I remember, you work in Abaqus. A detailed description of arc-length method (with figures) can be found in the documentation of this software (Theory > Procedures > Buckling and postbuckling > Modified Riks algorithm). Another good source of information about Riks method is Crisfield's book "Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of Solids and Structures".
