Tsai-Wu failure criterion with solid46 layered elements

Here is a "philosophical" question about the SOLID46 layered elements... When I'm modelling a plate under tensile loading with SOLID46 (1 element through thickness and 2 layers for the element), I get logical results regarding the Tsai-Wu failure criterion. However, if I set the element to be only 1 layer, the failure criterion drops to a very low value. I thought this could be due to the thickness-to-width ratio of the elements, but I'm not sure. Could someone tell me his opinion about that?
