I need to make a tube furnace using a flanged heating element that will operate at about 1800F. Pressurized to 30PSI

2" ID x 10" Pipe with one side welded with a flanged heating element and the other welded cap.

What material would be appropriate?
It will be underwater

What exactly will be submerged in water? What will be inside this enclosed furnace?

A bit more description please.
Of course the surface in contact with the water will be cold, so there must be multiple walls, insulation, and such.

Perhaps an explanation of the end usage of the furnace will be helpful. My guess was that the heated substance is likely to explode, hence the tube assembly is immersed in water.

It will be filled with a pure Hydrogen atmosphere, and without Oxygen should not explode.

So furnace tube filled with hydrogen submerged in water

Thanks!

One of the Inconel alloys is what we used fo non-
water submersed retorts used in that temperature range.

Before filling with Hydrogen, you should purge with Nitrogen or Argon to to remove all air (oxygen) for safety otherwise you could have a bomb.

Is hydrogen the charge material to be heated to 1800F at 30psi? The heating elements are external to the tube and the whole assembly is made water tight and immersed in water. Will this description of the apparatus fit well?

I would be more concerned about installing the safety controls and pressure tightness against water leakage or hydrogen leakage. You could use any of the inconel alloys for the application.

Are the heating elements sheathed? What if there any contaminants in the sheath, which will come into contact with heated hydrogen?

Good Luck and safe working!

The standard heating coil material for this would be nichrome.
