Dear Team,

I want to check the requirement for Tubesheet to 'cone' shell joint welding and its stresses. please find below snap for the joint as yellow highlighted. Is this joint acceptable by ASME Sec VII div.1 or TEMA.?
Request you to highlight how to evaluate this joint and do we foresee any future challenge.

Hi mfgenggear,

I am sorry 3D view is not available, if you can imagine the lip of the NEN tubesheet is directly welded to the cone.

Regards

Well, I'll take a swing at this. Keep in mind I am not familiar with the latest.

I doubt TEMA has anything to say about this weld detail. I think it would be acceptable under Sec VIII, Div 1 subject to UW-13 rules, Fig UW-13.2

It is more common to introduce a short cylinder between the TS and cone though.

vpkhati, it appears that your cone half-apex angle is quite steep. Half apex angles greater than 30 deg are troublesome to design under Sec VII, Div 1 rules.

See for internal pressure / external pressure:
UG-32(f) / UG-33(f), Apx 1-5, (a) & (g) / Apx 1-8.

See UG-36 (e) & (f)

See also Table UW-12, Type (8) regarding angle joints.

I'd avoid it if I could.

Regards,

Mike
