Tubesheet-to-hemi head joint

Dears,
I wonder what's your opinion on applicability of UG-34 to a joint between hemispherical head and a round, flat tubesheet welded into a circular hole in the head? Axis of the tubesheet passes through the center of the head, but is not parallel to axis of the head's skirt. Tubesheet is twice thicker than the head wall.

Konrad, my opinion, not at all.

This weld joint would most likely would fall under UW-13.

The tubesheet itself may fall under part UHX if it meets the applicability requirements. If not, you may be able to use TEMA formulas.

UG-34 is normally used for the design of flat heads, although it does contain requirements for some of the weld joints.

SnTMan, thanks. This is what I think as well. Only my AI asks me how does this meet the UG-34. It doesn't even match it's phisosophy, I can't explain to him that it's not applicable!

It appears to me that your AI is addressing the UG-34 reference found in UW-13(d), which, I agree with you, doesn't apply, as it specifically attachment of heads to shells. As you don't supply specific attachment details I believe that applicable paragraph would be UW-13(e). I concur with SnTMan that UG-34 does not apply in this case.

Konrad I think you CAN explain (respectfully, or course) how and why you do not beleive UG-34 is applicable. Just lead him through your reasoning, step by step, using the various Code paragraphs as reference. Sometimes they just want to see you've thought about it.
