My company specs the use of Tungsten Carbide, CD650 on several of our drawings. I want to input the material properties into our FEA software so that we can get as accurate an analysis as possible. Unfortunately the engineer that originally spec'd it is no longer here and I can't seem to get the information I need from our vendor. Can anyone get me the material properties for Tungsten Carbide CD650? Specifically I need the:
Density
Young's Modulus
Poisson's Ratio
Yield Strength
Ultimate Tensile Strength
Thermal Conductivity
Linear Expansion
Specific Heat

I've tried a thorough Google search and a search of Matweb and I can't find any specifics. Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks

David

CD650 is a Carbidie-brand of carbide. Since they were acquired by Kennametal, I don't know if they changed or discontinued any grades. Carbidie is based out of Irwin, PA, and the old phone # was 800-227-2434. Again, as they were acquired, you may have to call them directly to avoid getting thrown into the Kennametal customer service loop. Their old website URL now autodirects you to the Kennametal site.

My contact there years back was John Lakovic. I'm not sure if he's still there or not.

If you have no luck with Carbidie, you might try giving General Carbide a call. A bunch of Carbidie engineers moved there right after Kennametal acquired Carbidie and started making some management changes. Contact info can be found at

I already tried speaking to some people at General Carbide and they weren't able to tell me anything. I will try Kennametal. Thank you for your help.

Carbidie CD650
WC 85%
Co 15%
Average grain size – less than 1 micron
Transverse Rupture Strength 3150 N/mm2 ((457,000 psi. app.)
Density 14 g /cm3
89.5 HRA hardness

Old grade – tough but not particularly long wearing.

As Kennametal buys other companies they consolidate grades and plants. What they consider an equivalent grade doesn’t always agree with end users’ opinion. Also different plants manufacture differently which can make a difference in results.

A more modern grade will have a toughness of 537,000 psi with a hardness of 92.3 HRA.
