These have been around for many years now - in layman's language, they are called inlet guide vanes - used in expanders and compressors to maintain hydraulic efficiency at part load. If you search using "inlet guide vanes", you may have better luck.

Not quite true.

Inlet guide vanes is something. Variable diffusor is something different.
Variable diffuser consists in adjustable angles of the (vaned) diffusor blades. They are generally (but rarely) used in integrally geared machines / overhung machines.

It's not inlet I'm interested in, it's outlet. I generally have an idea about how it could be designed, but would still love to consult a reference. Mind that I'm intrrested in the mechanical side of things, not the CAE calculation of blades shape.
