Hi,

In the UG-27 Thickness of shells under internal pressure (g), any reduction in thickness within a shell course [...] shall be in accordance with UW-9.

Then UW-9(c) tapered transitions, minimum length of taper is required where offset is higher than (1/4 the thickness of smaller section or 3mm).

If I am to design an integral type flange to Appendix 2, shall this UW-9(c) requirement apply to hub length, which has also requirements in Fig. 2-4 sketches (6), (6a), (6b), which are that if slope>1/3, minimum hub length is 1.5 times the thickness of smaller section (go)?

Maybe I forgot to state that my question is about ASME Section VIII Division 1.

Yours,

tigny, Is your hub length made up of different sections?
If so, then UW-9 (c) applies in my opinion.
The key words in UW-9 are this.........shall be provided at joints between sections that differ in thickness.......

FAQ731-376

UW-9(c) applies when joining two shells (one possibly being the skirt of a head) with differing thicknesses. For flanges this stipulation is not applicable, unless the thickness g0 was thicker (or thinner?!) than the neck (and that would be a quite unusual condition).

CodeJackal, Prex,

thank you for your input.

I am currently updating an in house excel file so I wanted to check this particular element; it's for an integral design so I thought those chapter of ASME could mix.
