Hello,

Does anyone knows the background of UG-45? Why is it introduced in the code? I was told the reason is the nozzle load. I don't see any logic behind it since "ta" already requires us to include all UG-22 loads (i.e. including piping load).

Does anyone understand the background of UG-45 requirement? Thanks!

UG-45 is based on thousands of experiences during manufacturing.

It's all about the nozzle load imposed on the vessel wall. Higher neck thickness means more stiffer and less bending stress on the vessel wall (S[sub]b=M/I[/sub]). I-relates to the section property that relates to the thickness.

1) .......I don't see any logic....

There are many situations in the code that are not required to be logical, are decided by conventions due to experiences during fabrications, and are expressed in mathematical formulas.

2) Please, read again definition of "ta" in UG-45
Piping loads "are not included" in UG-45, they shall be "considered"
