UG NX 2 - Can we engrave text on a solid?

Hello,

Does Unigraphics NX 2.0.2.2 (or previous versions) support the engraving of text onto a solid? That is, how does one make a "word-shaped" hole?

Please keep in mind that my background is not in CAM, but I believe that you can now engrave UG native text (meaning 2D text created with UG's annotation editor). Other than that, I'm not aware of any other alternatives. This has been a major topic amongst UG development & there is something in the works down the road (not offical, but maybe NX3) that hopefully will make both designers, drafters & machine programmers quite happy.

It will involve the capability of actually modeling the text in 3D and the last I heard, UGS was going to try to make it a modeling feature recognized by the CAM side of things as well, so as not to get wires crossed, etc.

I just checked the What's New guide for NX 2.0, and you can engrave drafting text in UG's Manufacturing module. Here's a breakdown:

What is it?
With Text Engraving, you can machine drafting text in Planar Milling and Surface Contouring.

Why should I use it?
Use Text Engraving when you want to engrave text directly on the part. This is useful for things like part numbers and mold cavity ID numbers.

Where do I find it?
For planar text, go to create operation, select the mill_planar type --> planar_text operation.

For contoured text, select the mill_contour type --> contour_text operation.

To create a group, go to create geometry, mill_planar type --> mill_text group.

To create a note, go to Application --> Drafting, turn off Display Drawing on the drafting toolbar, and select Annotation Editor, enter your text, and create without leader.

Try Weidemann Engineering. They have devloped the use of True Type fonts for use with UG Solid Models.

I did try the link to Weidemann engineering and downloaded their evaluation software. It works quite nicely! I'm gonna have to look at the NX2 supported solution via the manufacturing license.

Do anyone know what's the difference between the evaluation versioin and the registered version?

What is the limit on the evaluation version?

I believe there is a 30 day limit to the evaluation version.
