I'm having a hard time locating the environment variable (I'm assuming there is one) that controls how selected part and cut areas in countour milling CAM are rendered......one version of NX4 I was using last month would highlight them brightly shaded on a shaded model (which I think is the default condition) ---- the newer version I'm using now seems to only highlight the faces in wireframe over a shaded model, which is very hard on my eyes and brain........'a cask of rum and a fistful of dubloons to the matey that can answer me question'........

Thanks,

They could be controlled from Customer Defaults, but they aren't.......as far as I can discern. If this is so, why aren't they??

Thanks for playing..........

Question is still unanswered......is there/what is the environment variable (I'm assuming there is one) that controls how selected part and cut areas in countour milling CAM are rendered......one version of NX4 I was using last month would highlight them brightly shaded on a shaded model (which I think is the default condition) ---- the newer version I'm using now seems to only highlight the faces in wireframe over a shaded model, which is very hard on my eyes and brain........'a cask of rum, a fistful of dubloons, and a mighty cannon to the matey that can answer me question'........

Thanks, again,

We are using NX4.0.4.2.

I think the setting you are looking for is located in the Preferences dialog.

Pick Preferences> Selection...
This opens the Selection Preferences dialog window.

Check the last entry in the dialog window: Highlight with Thick Width.

With this option checked, model edges will highlight with a thick width instead of a thin highlight. This setting is a global setting for all applications in NX4.

Hope this helps.

No, I have always been using thick width highlight on edges -- that works great.

What leads me to believe that this setting is embedded somewhere in the ugii_env file is that when I was using 4.0.2.2, any selected part and cut areas would shade properly on a shaded model. It was when I was switched to 4.0.4.2 that these selected part and cut areas were now rendered wireframe over a shaded model ---- which is useless to me now.

These two different software versions behave differently, and from what I know about UG, if the variable isn't presented to the user in a preference setting somewhere in the user interface, there's a high probability that the behavior is controlled in the ugii_env file.

Anyway, i got an answer back from GTAC:

Dear Kevin,

Your recent call to the Global Technical Access Center, Incident Report (IR)
Number 5858646 opened on 26-NOV-2007, has been researched by our GTAC
software engineers. They have determined that this perceived problem is
an enhancement to the current software functionality.

This IR was converted into an enhancement request (ER) on 26-NOV-2007
and is now referenced as ER Number 5858646. It is OPEN for review at this time.

wooohooo ------ I guess that the way to clear your desk of work is to tell someone they have a perceived problem.......that way, you don't have to do anything about it. The part I can't understand is how my perceived problem can really be called an enhancement to the current software functionality ---- I didn't have a perceived problem until I was upgraded!!

No, folks.....this is a real problem. If I can't see to select enough adjacent part faces to complement the faces I select for cut area, the chance of violating the part and either (1) gouging the workpiece, or (2) crashing the mill increases dramatically. But, that must not sound like a big problem......heck, all anyone uses NXx for is for making pretty pictures and massive assemblies, eh? No one really wants to do any WORK with this software, do they??

Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track trying to solve this.......I'd just like to put a bit of code in my custom directory and be done with it..............

Capnhook,

I am running NX4.0.2.2 and when I select a cut area to display all I get are the edges of the faces to highlight.
If I Edit the cut area and select Append then all the faces highlight.

Thanks Joycejo. That's the way it's behaving in NX4.0.4.2 for me now here. Someone here must have changed the ugii_env variable to make it highlight shaded when I was on NX4.0.2.2. It really works much better the way it was. A programmer should not have to 'Edit > Append' to really only see a portion of what has been selected. It was more logical to be able to see the cut area "spray painted" over the selected colored shaded part faces. When you went to append faces, no faces were highlighted ---- this wasn't a problem because one was looking for adjacent part faces ----- one just rolled the cursor over the adjacent area, and any valid appendable faces were highlighted in wireframe. One now does not have the ability to see both selected part faces and cut area, unless one likes to squint at colored wireframe over colored wireframe and try to imagine what is being rendered..........

Is there a variable in the ugii_env file that controls this behavior??
