Rf=mean radius after forming

This question might sound like it has the most obvious answer, but does anyone know this value is calculated?

According to Compress, it does not appear to be (spherical radius + the knuckle radius)/2, nor (spherical rad. + 2*the knuckle rad.)/3.

When the Code does this kind of thing it drives me crazy. They want to be so specific and are able to direct and redirect you all over the Code book(s) for the simplest of calculations, but neglect a detail like this...[/rant]

BigTank, it should be just the centerline radius of the knucle in a formed head. See UG-32 and Appenidix 1.

Mike

I'm sorry if I'm being dense, Mike, but I just don't see anywhere that says or even alludes to that.

Incidentally, that does make sense with the Compress numbers.

No matter what, that is a terribly defined variable.

My apologies, I'm not having a good Code day. I'm sure you understand.

BigTank, oh, yeah I understand all right.

You're right it is not well defined, however if you keep in mind the idea is to calculate the maximum strain caused by forming, it may help in the future.

Mike

Mike,

Gotcha. If I'd not been having the day I was, I would've thought about it and come to your conclusion: the maximum strain is in the knuckle.

Tom,

Thank you. Usually I search the forums and check the Codeware FAQ, not necessarily in that order. Yesterday was a bit more tedius than normal...the brain was a little sludgy with frustration.
