Does stainless have any published values on ultimate bearing
strength, which can be higher than tensile strength? Could not find here or on net.

For example aluminum 5083-H321 has ult TS/yield= 44 Ksi/31ksi and ultimate bearing strength/bearing yield = 84ksi/53ksi. per published data from the Aluminum Association.

My metals handbooks are at work and later editions of machinery's handbook but I have an old (17th edition-1964) machinery's handbook here at home. It shows S.S. compressive strength to be equal with T.S. and gives the following values for some T.S.:

302 85-125 psi
321 85-95
347 90-100

Do you have a particular grade of S.S. in mind and what temper do you intend on using? Otherwise you need to state what are the envronmental conditions and some other service condtions/requirements and then somebody will have access to more update info.

Thank you for responding.

I don't think the bearing strength/tenile strength ratio data for stainless is anything like to aluminum. These ratios for aluminum are not readily available

What is interesting is the Aluminum association chart for aluminum lists compressive strength values at about 60% of tensile, but ultimate bearing strengths at about 190 to 180%
of tensile. I believe it has to do with the E modulus being 1/3 of steel, which would allow more effective area to resist the bearing load (sorta like in soil). Someone could get into trouble if using this data the wrong way. These ratios for aluminum are not readily available and this is probablly why.

God Bless
