Hi all,

I would like to hear any opinion in the subject of Ultrasonic inspection in composite laminates having a metallic insert or shim.

I have heard about some Ultrasonic inspections where the shim is not detected, some of the theories is that the composite/metal compaction is good that the ultrasonic inspection is not able to capture it.

Thanks,

There is an important aspect to composite solid laminate or sandwich structure Inspection [especially US-NDI] for critical parts/structure: NDI reference standards must be developed and used during the process, to minimize potential for 'missing an element or defect'. These standard must have built-in defects, and/or 'features', so that the NDI tech can refer-back-to-them for comparison/reference.

See SAE ARP5605 Solid Composite Laminate NDI Reference Standards
