Unable to do calculations in Modify Dimension Dialog

When entering a dimension value in the Modify dialog, I can enter "1/2" for a .50 dimension, but I can not perform any other calculation. I get the error "Please enter a number between XXXXXXX and YYYYYYY". I am also not able to enter Equations. No matter what I try (including "TEST = 1") I get the error "Equation entered is invalid".

It seems as though the math function is turned off or something. Any ideas?

TIA,

Uninstall/reinstall didn't seem to solve it. Starting to suspect an x64 vs x32 issue. Now running on 64bit Vista.

You don't mention which version of SolidWorks you're running or whether it's 32-bit versus 64. Those pieces of info will help us a little.

I was afraid you'd laugh. I am running an old copy of 2001plus. I had it loaded on my old laptop (32-bit Windows 2000) and at some point the calcs stopped working. I think it was after some 'essential windows update'. Fast forward. I now have a new laptop running 64 bit Vista. I had a couple of side jobs pop up so I loaded my 2001plus on this new laptop. The calcs still don't work. And this job requires some equations to generate a complex curve.

Hmmmm..... Yes the SW2001Plus on a Vista system could be the problem.

Not sure any of us can help you with such an old version of SolidWorks.

What Anna said...
I suspect you'll run into other problems as well.

As a work around, can you insert a design table, and define the equations in Excel?

Eric

Thanks for the feedback. Since it was working and then stopped working on my old laptop, I was hoping it was fixable.

I've never used design tables. I'll give that one a try. I bought this seat to do some contract work years ago. Since then, I've been full-time with 3 different companies that all used ProE. I prefer SolidWorks but just haven't used it in about 7 years.

From the SW knowledge base on that error:

Question:

When trying to do a math operation, a + or – in a dimension box, an error displays saying, "Please enter a number between 0 and 39370.079." Why?

Answer:

This is most likely caused by corrupt or incomplete VBA components on the system. Please insert a SolidWorks DVD and browse to the <Drive>\PreReqs\VSTA folder and run vsta_aide.msi

Please install these components if they are not already installed or choose repair. If this does not address the issue, please create an Rx of this problem and contact your local support representative.

I would try the DVD solution, its the easiest one to perform.

Thanks Scott. I tried re-installing several times over the weekend. I even tried a safe-mode install. When I did, I actually got a error message relating to the VBA install. No doubt my 2001Plus disks know nothing about Vista, but maybe I can find a similar folder and can manually install.

Nor does SW2001 know about VSTA as it did not exist then. VSTA is not Vista the operating system. It is Visual Studio Tools for Applications.

That KB article does not apply for your vintage version of SW.

Dang I missed the version in the post... 2001 is far to old to run on today's machine and have their own set of problems because of it and there is no support for that version.

I would recommend upgrading to 2011 and then you have near the issues you are experiencing today.

No, it's definitely a legal copy. That's why it's still on 2001 because I'm too cheap to keep up the mainenance. LOL And as I mentioned, I was running on Win 2000 and had the same issue occur after an update so I was suspecting software/configuration and not hardware/OS. And it may surprise you, but otherwise, I know of no issues. It runs great on Vista.

But I agree totally, it is time for an upgrade...

You can pay your maintenance late and just get a late fee of $500.00 or so charged and access all the versions since 2001+. You probably won't recognize the software due to all the new improvements and new Command Manager.

With some other systems you need to buy the full license all over again and they force you to pay maintenance.

Michael

Thanks Michael. Sounds like I need to track down my salesman and see what I can work out. It might not be as bad as I thought it was.
