I'm trying to open a file created in another department. I was told it was created with Mechanical 2005 (which is what I'm running) But when I do anything to open the file, after coming up as a read only (I just tell it to open read only anyway) it comes up with the following message:

Access Violation. Unable to open drawing.

I know a colleague had something similar on his drawings and when I called him he did something and made them openable. Unfortunately he is not currently here. Help!

Maybe "_recover" or
insert as a block in a new *.dwg?

Sorry, I tried both of those as well as xref. I also cannot view them as thumbnails. Anyone else?

There are two options in this situation. First right-click on the file and select properties. Look at all the tabs for information like an encrypted or corrupted file. If the file is ok then you can find out more information by using Event Viewer in the Computer Management dialog box in XP. You can view events that are written to various Windows XP log files, namely the Application, Security, and System logs. Any error messages in the application log file can give you valuable information about what is causing this problem. Hope this helps - John

Have You the *.bak file?

You may try opening the drawing in plain AutoCAD instead of Mechanical. We had an issue with Mechanical files created in later version than we had and when saved down to our version, would crash AutoCAD and/or not open them. I know this does not sound like the same exact case, but give it a shot.
