I have an defined axis in main assy. I have a subassembly in it, and used the same axis to define positions of parts in the subassembly so I could work on it without haveing both assy files open. When I open only the sub assy, I get the undefined axis error. It makes sense, but I'm wondering how to get rid of it in the sub. Can I fix the axis in some way? If I have the main assy open, when I work on the subassy, the error does not come up. Is there a fix for this or am I just whining?

In your sub-assy, create planes which intersect where you want the axis to be, then create an axis using thos intersecting planes.

If you want to maintain a link between the top level and subassembly axes, you can use the top level axis to create an axis in the subassembly. Edit the subassembly in context and create an axis using the top level axis to define the subassembly axis.

Once the subassembly axis is made, use it to define the subassembly features.

We design lots of hinges and small mechanisms. I find models are more robust if I copy key datums from upper levels like pivot axes and then refer to those copies (which still reference the higher level) rather than just use the higher level datums in context.

Tick, that is what I "thought" I did. When I click on the axis in the subassembly, without the main assy open it tells me it was made from a cylindrical face, that is now missing. I've tried to do an edit definition on the axis, but when the "reference axis dia box comes up, cylindrical/conical surface is filled an, selected items is blank, and all parts in the feature manager tree are greyed out. I dont want to redo this axis because so many things are connected to it. Do you have any more suggestions. It is a similar application to your hinge assy, itsa fulcrum for a roller system.

Nevermind, I think I just fixed it. The axis was the first thing following the axis in my feature manager tree, therfore it couldnt be defined by anything after that. I did measurements from front and top, put offset planes from frontplane and topplane to those dimensions, then edit-definition-ed the axis as a intersection of those planes.

Thanks for the help
