I'm not familiar with earth science, but could someone help me out with this questions. I need to know the unit weight of soil based on the description of the soil composition. Specifically, a value expressed in lbs/ft^3 for two soil descriptions:

1) Loose to medium dense sands and gravel; soft clays and silt
2) Dense to very dense sand and gravel.

A "ballpark" value will be sufficient or maybe point me to references that I can get accessed to them easily. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Don't you mean pounds per cubic yard, NOT per cubic foot !?

If so your weights sound pretty light.

Of course, one could always go out, get a box full of the soil and weigh it. But that would mean leaving the office and missing all those important phone calls and emails.

good luck

Use a value of 100 to 115 pcf or so for clays and silts...

and,

120 to 130 pcf for sand and gravel

Correction:

Your weights sound pretty HEAVY !

Your soil is about 40 times the weight of water ( 62.4 lbs/cu ft ) Lead weighs about 13 times as much as water.

good luck looking up answers in books
