Universal CLIP for 48Pin TSOP1 package

Is the Universal CLIP for 48Pin TSOP1 package IC reliable enough to connect programmer to chip and read memory on device, without desoldering flash from board? Has anybody used it?

I can't answer that question, but does the board have a JTAG interface? That's the usual approach for (re)programming circuits after assembly.

Sometimes the chassis even has a cutout for access to the JTAG pins.
 
No, the board don't have any JTAG pins. I wanna know in particular, can the other components of the PCB (connected to chip) affect the proper flash reading. I have no schematic diagram.
 
JTAG lines are usually shared with other peripherals, which means there will be circuitry attached to those pins... and yes, external circuitry can greatly affect JTAG functionality.

Not to mention those clips require quite a bit of free space around the chip to even plug in.

IS this a board that you designed? Was it already designed for reprogramming? The odds are probably only 1:3 that what you want to do is possible. The board could already have reprogramming circuitry, or was designed to be not reprogrammable, in which case the pins are likely grounded. Only if it was specifically designed for external reprogramming would the pins even be usable.

This CLIP is not JTAG connector, its for direct in-circuit flashing. As I said there is no JTAG pins.
 
i don't think anyone was talking about the board, per se, but rather, whether the part that you are attempting to clip onto has a JTAG interface; which many FPGAs do have.

JTAG or not, my comments still hold. Flash chips do not sit alone; they are connected to various other components in the system, and as such the lines will not be directly controllable without back-powering something else. Back-powering a system is often bad. If chips are meant to be programmed in-circuit, the design must take that into account and appropriate circuitry installed to prevent such back-powering.

Do you have a system already for programming the chip in question? Is it capable of driving all other chips in the circuit? And no, you can't power the circuit normally and expect the programmer to work as now you'll have two systems trying to simultaneously drive the Flash, and that never ends well for at least one chip.

If this is a customer-designed programmer, do you have the algorithms for programming that specific chip? Not hard, it's in the data sheet, but it will take some time to write the code if it doesn't already exist.

Sometimes the easiest answer is to remove the chip from the board, but without more information no one can help with that determination.

As I think that hardware design is not supposed to be in-circuit programmable as it's cheap mass product. I'm not going to reprogram the chip, I only want read flash and get dump (MX29LV160ATTC-70 flash). I have no flash programmer yet.
 
Reading takes similar algorithms to writing, it's not just setting a few address lines and reading what's on the data lines. Gone are the days of dumb memory, there's a state machine within modern chips that needs to be tickled. Without a programmer/reader, you're not going to get anywhere.

Have you made sure the Flash isn't locked from prying eyes, either? Even cheap, mass produced products are often sensitive to IP theft, so if I were them, I'd lock it away.
