Is there any way to analyze an unreinforced CMU wall using strength design instead of allowable stress design? If you do use strength design, it is my thoughts that the you may use masonry tensile strain and strength in calculating the balance failure point on the interaction. I have not checked, but this concept may not give any higher flexural strength and would be similar if not equal to allowable stress calculations. Any thoughts?

Most masonry codes permit the analysis of plain masonry walls and have permissable stresses. In addition, most textbooks on masonry design have examples showing the analysis and design of plain masonry walls.

ACI 530 permits strength design for unreinforced masonry. It's in Section 3.2.
