Hello all-
We have received into our shop a 500hp vertical pump motor. Allis Chalmers 15HS frame, 240 rpm. Upper thrust and guide bearing assembly is Kingsbury tilting pad type. Lower guide bearing is the one in question. Motor came in due to lower guide bearing failure. We could not determine if side forces from the pump caused the failure, or perhaps improper installation of the bearing assembly. The lower bearing assembly consists of four babbitt lined arcs, suspended around the shaft. The bolts that hold the arcs bottom out in their holes, so the arc is never tight to the frame. Each arc has a center bolt with a lock nut which will bottom out against the frame. If this center bolt is too tight, it will cock the arc tight against the shaft. Is anyone familiar with this style bearing? We need to know how to adjust the proper clearences etc. As I said earlier, we cannot be certian the way it was assembled was correct.
Thanks for any and all input,
Bill
