Unwrapping an L-shaped bracket 1

Ok guys, I'm new to NX8 (I used Autodesk in college) and I'm having a little trouble assimilating to this new program. I have an L-shaped bracket that I was trying to use unwrap to unfold and make flat. I figured that "unwrap" would be the best way to go about it but everytime I try I get this message ->"wrap face must be a cone or cylinder." Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brandon

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated..

Do you have the Sheet Metal license?

[green]To the Toolmaker, your nice little cartoon drawing of your glass looks cool, but your solid model sucks. Do you want me to fix it, or are you going to take all week to get it back to me so I can get some work done?[/green]

not sure.. i know i can't use any edit> surface or edit> facet body tools bc I get a license error so.. no?

Most of those surfacing and edit facet body tools are part of shape studio, not sheet metal.

If you go to the NX Start button, will it let you switch to the sheet metal module?

NX Sheet Metal does NOT require an additional license. As long as you have a Modeling license, you will have access to NX Sheet Metal.

Note however that 'Aerospace Sheet Metal', which despite having most of the same features as NX Sheet Metal, does require an additional license due to also having more advanced, aerospace specific, functionality including unforming tools better suited to the complex shapes which you're able to realize using this module.

That being said, for something like a typical 'L-shaped' bracket, NX Sheet Metal should be all that you'll need.

I have the license for Modelling but not sheet metal unfortunately

Sorry i failed to state that at the bend of the L both the inside and outside curves have been blended so what I'm really trying to unwrap is like a hollowed out quarter cylinder I guess.

So you're saying that if you go to the NX 'Start' item and select 'NX Sheet Metal' that you get a license error, correct?

Exactly where did you acquire your version of NX?

I'm not the original poster, but id you are waiting on a reply either of us, here it is.

I'm not sure exactly where it comes from, our IT department handles that sort of thing. I'm pretty sure they either deal directly with Siemens or though or local Siemens rep based out of Orlando.

sorry John, just now reading your post. I ditto mmauldin tho, ask the IT dept. :p. same license error as well... I got it figured out though. some collegues of mine sent me their file information for openning the program bc some of my commands were missing. I'm basically computer iliterate tho so that's all I know haha. Thanks for trying though guys

Are you guys in the same company?
With 2 different versions of NX??
good luck man..

NX 7.5.5.4 with Teamcenter 8 on win7 64
Intel Xeon @3.2GHz
8GB RAM
Nvidia Quadro 2000

No, different company.

BME21, can you share the solution?

The reason I asked is that while it is true that NX Sheet Metal is controlled by a separate license than Modeling, virtually ALL of the NX packages that we've sold in the last several years have come with Modeling and NX Sheet Metal bundled together. With these packages the only optional Sheet Metal is the Aerospace product, which is an extension of what's already there.

I work for MTD Products, they do everything they can to run as ridiculously lean as possible so that could have something to do with it. I ended up using the transform/translate function once I got a program file that had that function, I knew I had to be missing something just looking at the toolbar...

OK, NOW I know the situation that you're in. MTD is a long time user of UG/NX and as such they've been using the software since well before we started to package modules together into bundles where individual licensing of modules, except for very special applications, was no longer an issue. I suspect that they never felt the need to convert their 'floating' licensing to bundles which means that unless they purchased some add-on NX Sheet Metal licenses that they're just not on your system. But knowing what MTD does I would think that they would benefit from this module so perhaps there should be some consideration given to acquiring at least one of two 'floating' licenses.
