Hi

unfortunately i am not very familiar with US Standards.
I need a counterbore standard equivalent to DIN 974-2 for ASME B18.2.2 (heavy) hex nuts.
I can find dimensions for socket head cap screw counterbores but not for hex nuts

Any ideas?

Thank you!!!

If you're just looking for a guide to design to (and not a standard to call out on drawings or contracts), you can find this info in Machinery's handbook. Here's a link to the relevant table in an older edition: (copy and paste the whole link since the insert link tool doesn't like this URL)

That same pdf also has dimensions for heavy hex nuts if you need that too.

Good information..this document really helps! Thanks a lot!!!

ballvalve1337, you need a hard copy of that book yourself. It is the mechanical engineer's bible.

I'll second Jboggs's recommendation. A lot of some of the more basic information in it is also quickly available online (screw dimensions, sheet metal thickness, etc), but quite a few times I've been unable to find the answer I need online, but found it quickly in my Machinery's Handbook (NPT hole tapped depth and engagement comes to mind).

The counterbore is more related to the wrench socket diameter required than to the fastener - still this may depend on washer usage. Why is a nut in a counterbore? Is there a radius at the junction between counterbore seat and side of the bore? Is the flange too weak at a thickness relating to distance from opposite side to bottom-of-counterbore that does not allow the counterbore to be eliminated? Ask some critical questions of the application and purpose for this.
