I'm trying to find the US equivalent to 16Ni Cr 4Pb UNI-EN 10277-4. Does anybody know what it is, or the location of any online databases for future equivalence searching?

Thanks,
P

Perform a search on this site to find recommended references (Stahlschlussel and the ASM Worldwide Equivalents books).

Also look at faq330-286.

Please see FAQ731-376 for tips on how to make the best use of Eng-Tips Fora.

First, UNI EN 10277-4 does not contain a grade 16NiCr4Pb: the officially recognized grade is 16NiCrS4 (1.5715). The addition of PB to the designation means that an addition of Pb is being specified, which makes this a non-standard grade. Second, there is no exact equivalent of this grade in North America. North American standards for carburizing steel grades do not feature any low-Ni/low-Cr alloys-- they either have high-Ni/low Cr or low-Ni/low-Cr-low-Mo. You need to understand the heat treating requirements for this particular part and then evaluate suitable North American grades, most likely those featuring low-Ni due to its exhorbitant price these days. Grade 8615 according to SAE J404 would be a good place to start in terms of similar hardenability, etc. Other typical carburizing grades are 4615, 4320, 8620, and 8822.
