Hi,
can anyone help in providing the information about using ASTM A1011/1008 AGAINST A682/684 CR HCS strip.

What cost effective operation heat treatment can be done to use the lower grade material as subsitute for Spring steel,or is there any cheap alternative material available for spring steel.

It would be helpful to have more information about your specific issue (design requirements, etc.). There are a few things that I can comment upon though. First, low carbon steels covered by ASTM A 1008/1011 do not respond to hardening treatments (quenching & tempering, austempering) and therefore are only capable of being strengthened by strain hardening (cold working). There are some applications with which I am familiar where a low carbon grade (chemical composition equivalent to 1008-1010 according to SAE J403) that is cold-rolled > 40% can be used instead of a higher carbon "spring temper" grade such as that specified in ASTM A 682/684. SAE J2392 covers these grades of cold-rolled strip. If all you need is very high strength (elastic limit) and not much formability, low carbon cold rolled strip steel in the "hard" or "number 1" temper can potentially replace high carbon spring grades.

Thanks TVP,
for letting the details,my application is to use in the sheet metal part Flat strip with 102 mm x 20 mm ,under Stress conditions at ends(Shear Stress).

If the forces do not cause large elastic deflections, and then result in large stress amplitudes, then this may be a reasonable alternative. Keep in mind that these low carbon steels will not have the same fatigue strength for a given ultimate strength that spring steels possess, and will suffer more stress relaxation under high stresses. Creep and wear resistance will also be reduced.
