We intend to use galvanized ladder to do some welding job inside 304 and 316 stainless steel vessels. The use of ladder will be temporary. We know that zinc from galvanized steel ladder can be picked up while doing welding and can be a potential threat to cause liguid embrittlement of the weld. Colleagues are requested to provide input on the following:

1. Is it normally allowed to take galvanized steel ladder inside the stainless steel vessels for temporary jobs or it is strictly prohibited due to safety concerns?

I know of plants that require the use of wooden ladders, but to be honest most places don't ask.
It shouldn't be a risk. You should be weld preping each area as you go. Now if you are going to do a bunch of prep and then well them all it could be an issue.

I've seen galvanized ladders used in SS tanks many times for inspection and or repair. We only prohibited their use in lined or coated tanks cars. This prohibition included all metal ladders.
In fact we had a galvanized ladder specifically made to hang off a 24" manway for tank access on large SS tanks.
