Use of Piping Components in Vessels

Hi all,

perhaps someone could help clarify the following :

I have an heat exchanger, designed to ASME Section VIII, Div.1 & TEMA. It is a single pass unit, the shell is made from say NPS 6 pipe (or any similar nominal pipe size). Because it is a single pass unit, it has no partition plates.

Am I permitted, in terms of the rules of ASME Section VIII, Div.1 & TEMA, to make use of piping flanges to ASME B16.5 (or for bigger sizes ASME B 16.47), for the girth flanges and flat channel covers (if there are any) ?

Please could you also tell me where in ASME Section VIII, Div.1 it prohibits or endorses the use of ASME B 16.5 / B16.47 piping components for girth flanges / flat covers.

You may refer to Appendix 2 , 2-1 (c). Here again ASME does not prohibit the use of standard flanges.

As regards flat heads, that is end covers, you may refer to UG 34. Here again standard flanges are not prohibited. You may have to run the calculation again to check whether the flange satisfies the UG requirements.
To solve your problem as regards End cover, you may refer to UG 34 (c) 1, where in "Circular flanges conforming to any of the flange standard listed in table U-3 and further limited by UG 44 shall be acceptable for the diameters and pressure temp ratings ...."

Be careful. Your AIA may not like this for good reason. Suggest you reach an agreement with them.

What kind of service is this? Maybe UW-2? Have you looked at UG-11,UW-12,UW-18,UW-21 and all of Appendix 2? What pressures are involved?

If you by pipe fittings make sure they comply with all the requirements in SecII. CYA: you may wish to get a MTR for the same.
