I am a wastewater mechanical engineer acting, in part, as a chemical. I need to perform mass balance of a few treatment option for a waste stream. I have found a few free-to-download and open source software options that will help with this. Does anyone have recommendation for software to assist in process simulation, particularly to develop a mass balance.

Aspen Plus or Aspen Hysys both commonly used in the chemical industry - enough to be called the industry standard, IMO.

DWSIM is an open-source, free version of ASPEN. You might want to give that a look before springing for the $ of a Aspen license.
