I've been trying to locate this file so I can set up a site customization scenario. I've done a search on my entire hard drive and can't find it anywhere. I've made changes to my toolbars already, and those changes continue to exist, so I don't understand why I can't find the file. Is this file saved to the registry? I thought I read something about that in another thread.

Any thoughts on this? Am I looking for the right file? This is in NX4.

Search in C:\Documents and Settings\[user name] if you're launching NX without a custom environment (.bat file).

Actually it's a little more involved than that. In your case the 'usr.mtx' file should be found at:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Unigraphics Solutions\NX4

Note that you may have problems finding this path if you're trying to navigate to there from the Explorer window unless you have the option to 'Show hidden files and folders' toggled ON as everything starting with '\Local Settings' is normally hidden unless you've changed the above Folder Option.

Aaaah. Using the search command doesn't search those directories if they're not shown either. Pretty tricky.

Thanks guys.

That's not exactly true. If you open Windows Explorer, click on Documents & Settings folder, click Search to bring up the search sidebar, click All Files and Folders as well as expanding the More Advanced Options and check Search Hidden Files and Folders as well as Search subfolders, you don't need all the other path info. Just enter *.mtx and it will find ALL instances of a .mtx file in Documents and Settings. That is why I stopped at the username and didn't include the full path.

This works no matter what the folder view settings are in Windows XP.

Good info Tim. But maybe that's an XP thing? In 2000, when I check Advanced Options, all I see is Search Subfolders, Case Sensitive, and Search Slow Files, whatever the heck those are.

Might be...I assumed you wouldn't be running a non-supported O/S.

Regardless, I believe the UGII_USER_DIR default is where the user.mtx file resides and the out of the box setting is where John pointed you.

Sorry, but placing your 'user.mtx' in the location pointed to by UGII_USER_DIR will accomplish nothing. In fact, the very first time you run NX and then exit, it creates 'user.mtx' as found in the location that I documented in my last post, and the next time you run NX it will overwrite that file when you exit.

I was thinking this was the .dpv file and even then, that was the wrong environment variable. However, I didn't imply that any files be moved, only where to find them.

Maybe under your folder options you need to turn on hidden files and folders as well. If nobody mentioned that earlier. Other than that John's path was spot on for where the lives.

I suppose you want to customize the user.mtx file and save a copy so that it can be changed but generally stays locked. In other words most of the time you want to be able to get back the toolbars that you liked best.

What we do is to set up a user directory for each user where they can save their user.mtx file. Then by starting UG from a batch file we overwrite the one that UG uses with a copy of their saved favorite. When you close UG having changed your toolbars to something that you want to keep then just go copy the one that UG uses and paste it to replace your personal favorite. I imagine we could have written a batch job to do that too.

By "the one UG users I mean the copy of the file user.mtx that is saved in the directory path as shown below.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Unigraphics Solutions\NX

John,

Agreed, still thinking NX-3 due to the way the question was framed and the answers were shaping up. From NX-4 on we have started to install with some limited use of roles mainly because we're not dropping NX-3 yet probably we're not putting the time and effort into using the newer versions.

Well, what I wanted to do was set the system up so that when everybody starts using NX they will see the configuration that I have set up already.

At my previous employer everything was set up before I got there. At this employer, when I started using NX a bunch of things were missing. I assumed it was a license thing, since everything hasn't been ironed out here yet. Things like Patterns and Pads and Emboss weren't anywhere to be found. I soon realized that the Roles was probably responsible. After selecting one that supposedly had 'everything', I still was missing things. I ended up going through the customize list to find all the other things I was looking for. I finally got it the way I want it and thought I would set it up so that everybody sees the configuration that I have.

I'm wondering if that's the best idea now. Everybody usually wants to customize something. But I don't want to have people searching for all the stuff they need on every machine. Maybe the thing to do is copy my file onto each machine so they at least start out 'right', and then they are free to customize from there.
