Using Canned RF Devices

I am looking at engineering a short range transmitter receiver combination, but I do not have any RF design experience to speak of. I know of a couple of companies (RF Monolithics and Linx Technologies and probably more) offer canned RF devices that make the actual RF design portion of the project almost a no-brainer. However what concerns me is the testing (and FCC part 15 approval) of the unit once I get it designed. In short has anybody had any experience with using one of these type of devices successfully with a similiar background?

After doing some amount of research it seems as though it is not only suggested, but a necessity to do some amount of design and testing on at least the antenna portion of the project. For this I understand I would need some additional equipment such as a Network Analyzer, a Spectrum Analyzer and maybe some software design package for the actual antenna shape.

If anyone has any input for me on this type of a project I would really appreciate the feedback.
