Using Chinese and UK steelwork sections in the same steelwork structure

Hi all,

Is there any rule or code restriction that stops you from using steelwork sections from different countries in the same steelwork structure?

We have a structure fabricated using Chinese sections, but we need to do a modification / addition and it would be best to use UK sections if we were able to.

I'm not sure whether this would 'break any rules' as per the codes.

Any advice would be great.

So unlikely that I'll say "no restrictions"... although I can't "prove" a negative conclusion.

I agree with SRE, I don’t think you will find any restrictions to using steel sections from two different sources or two different countries. You should be able to show that the materials meet some std. like an ASTM std. or a UK or EU std., or some such, and that it is as good, or better, for the intended purpose as the material originally specified. You may have to apply some engineering judgement here, and be able to explain the reasons for the change or betterment, this is fairly common. Some contracts and specs. require that you be able to trace the lineage (mill certs. etc.) of major pieces of material from a specific mill and heat number to its final location in the structure or piece of equipment. And, if so, this should be made part of your purchasing process and agreement.

Thank you both for your advice.

I am happy that both sets of material will have full traceability and they will have been manufactured in line with the relevant codes.

I will complete my design update to the appropriate design codes, so I am happy that we will have no issues there.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking a golden rule of mixing and matching different countries sections.
