Hello everyone,
I have a project that I was hired by a contractor to design/check connections for structural and misc. steel. Shop drawings were already submitted and approved as noted but they are asking for connections calcs. Now the contractor has raleased that his detailer left no room for adjustment for elevator divider beams and showed end plates anchored to the shear wall at both ends of the beam. They don't want to change the "connection type" since this one has already been reviewed. But they want to make the beam 1/4"-3/8" shorter at each end, anchor it to the wall as per the detail and then use filler plates to fill the gap. I've checked AISC Spec J5 Fillers but I am wondering how this is going to affect the calculation check, if any, other than making sure the weld between end plate and filler plate is sufficient. Obviously filler plate would have to be installed in two parts with long cuts to accomodate existing anchors.I am not sure if these plates will do anything. I'd appreciate any input on that ! Thanks in advance!
Sketch of what I think they are talking about is attached. Both plates will have additional holes in case they hit rebars in the shear wall..
