Hello, i have problem with my simulation in Abaqus CAE. I would like to simulate the following case:

-Beam is fixed to the ground
-Cylinder is situated above the beam
-Contact between beam and cylinder is set
-Cylinder moves down
-Beam deflects

Everything looks fine, when i use BC-Displacement as load. Cylinder moves down, and beam deflects.

But now i would like to move the cylinder by applying a force to it, when i apply force to cylinder instead of displacement i get error while simulating: "Too many attempts made for this increment"

I tried also to perform dynamic simulation instead of static and when i apply only the force to cylinder, cylinder doesn't move at all.

Is it possible at all to simulate such cases without setting up motion parameters like displacement, velocity ? I tried also tu set only gravity, but cylinder still didn't move.

Thank you in advance.

Please look at your .msg file and read the warnings/errors - this will tell you what the problem is. The message "Too many increments" simply tells you the solver didn't converge but doesn't give any indication why.

If you can't figure it out from that come back and I will help with the solution.

At a guess the non convergence is due to cylinder accelerating off to infinity after rolling off the beam (OK I know its an implicit solve but you get what I mean after contact there is no constraint stopping the cylinder just rolling away, so no static equilibrium).

As to the explicit model I'm at a loss as to why that wouldn't solve unless your time increment is not long enough to calculate any movement e.g. if you only solve for 1 second yet it takes 2 seconds to actually make contact. For such models its usually best to place the cylinder as close as possible to the beam to save on solve time.
