using GE D400 gateway

hi everyone,

we are going to implement a temporray solution to connect three substations to a central location for control and monitoring. the substations are equipped with CCU GE multilin 1000. i am thinking to use GE D400 gateway and use the internet as a communication channel. do i need to use gateway at the substation and control center sides? should i use router as well? I've done a schematic (attached) for this connection. your input will be highly appreciated.

I don't have any experience with the GE products, so any comments regarding them are based on a very quick Google search.

Security is paramount, whether you configure it with dedicated firewalls or you choose routers / modems that can handle the required security functions by themselves, you need to ensure that all the equipment is configured appropriately for security. Consider who (and what, for any SCADA or data extraction) is going to be permitted to access the sites via communication, and how you're going to verify good traffic from bad.

I'm assuming from what I'd read that the Multilin 1000 doesn't have native ethernet, rather communications are serial. This would lean towards local Gateways, although you may be able to configure a remote gateway with a local serial device server, if you can configure the ethernet aspects of the gateway appropriately. You may be able to use a gateway at the control centre if you can configure the gateway to communicate with all the relays remotely, rather than a number of gateways at the remote location.

I don't see that you'd need two separate routers and firewalls at substation 1, it would make more sense to have all the devices on a local network there, and configure the router for access from wherever (assuming that the physical substation layout makes it possible to do so).

the GE multilin 1000 has an Ethernet port. ive attached the photos from our substations.do you mean that we can connect the CCU to a router and then to the internet. without the need of a specific gateway?

Hi ,

i work on a powerplant and we have 02 CCU1000 for brakers management and signalisation since 2009 , we are experiencing a failure on one of them , the CCU 1000 don't start i mean don't want to boot , the green ready led is "ON" but nothing is displayed on the screen .

we took contact with GE for replacement and they said that this model is old and is no more manufactured , they advise us to upgrade to another model .ed
can you help me for more diagnostics ?
