Hey guys. I am involved in a construction of a boiler in site and soon I am going to start NDT on welded joints . I was thinking to perform RT but due to little access in some cases UT, too. The client´s inspector has told us that the UT technique approved by ASME I is only phased array semi or automatized. I was searching on the ASME I code and I did not find anything related that these techniques are the only approved ones. Someone has some reference of this issue?

Section I provides the necessary requirements for volumetric NDT in PW-11. Also referenced is PW-52, which is in PW-11, below

PW-52 ULTRASONIC EXAMINATION
PW-52.1 When the ultrasonic examination method is
used for a weld requiring volumetric examination by
PW-11, the weld shall be examined throughout its entire
length using the techniques and standards for ultrasonic
examination as defined in Section V, Article 4, Mandatory
Appendix VII, Ultrasonic Examination Requirements for a
Workmanship Based Acceptance Criteria. As an alternative,
Nonmandatory Appendix E may be used for the ultrasonic
examination of welds requiring volumetric
examination by PW-11.

Do you have Section V?
