I have several questions about Volumes in V5 GSD. I understand that it is a closed skin. but that's all I know.

1)What is the logic (benefit) behind using them?
2)How do Volumes compare to Solids and Surfaces?
3)Are there users designers that use Volumes regularly?

Volumes are a GSO option in the GSD module - I think (because I do not have GSO) it gives the end user a great deal of solid capabilities without creating a solid per say.

1) Volumes are what CATIA used (prior to V4) for part modeling. There is really no need for them (IMO) with V5, due to the hybrid (solids & surfaces) capabilities.

2) Volumes are a B-rep definition of a part based on the closed skin of surfaces. Solids are a CSG definition using boolean operations of primative shapes. Both offer similar capabilities, but solids are easier to create and edit (IMO).

3) I was told that Volumes were added to V5, R14 at the request of Toyota, so I guess they use them. Volumes might also be required for legacy data conversion.

Thanks guys. I now have a better understanding in this area.

You may want to look at thread 560-123650 on volumetric features.

how do you search for a thread listed? when I type it nothing comes up.

m1mason - search volumetric features not the thread Id.

Derek

Sorry, I thought the thread id# would work
