V5R17 Crash on Open, Vista64, 8GB Ram. 2

When opening Catia I receive the error "Runtime execption" "Click OK to terminate". This only occurs when I load 8GB of ram, (4 sticks/slots).

Catia runs perfectly when I only have 4GB (2 sticks/slots).

I have purchased and have in front of me 4 different brands/speeds of ram, I have overclocked and underclocked everything on my system to see if I could find a solution, nothing.

A recent project that I have requires around 6.5GB's of RAM and I can not get it to work, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, Jeff - What does your Catia reseller tell you about installing Catia on Vista?

It is not supported but, it works fine with less memory. Speaking with my Motherboard and Memory manufacturers now it seems to only be a stability issue as Windows explorer crashes when I try and search.

My point was - if it's not supported, it's not likely for anyone to have any answers. Most of us are just users, who are "by the book", when it comes to Catia. Why, you might ask? Because it costs a fortune for Catia support, and you don't get help if you don't use the certified hardware/software. A Catia user cannot afford to monkey around with a wingnut configuration - especially when it pays the bills. (it costs too much to implement without experimentation, so most won't try)

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just letting you know that there aren't many advantages to be "adventurous" with Catia installations. It's guaranteed not to work. Hell, it doesn't work right most of the time on supported installations, so forget about the rest...

Probably you need to look deeper in the internet for this type of advice. This is the realm of crackers, not tube jockeys. Without being (or at least, trying to be) too accusatory, most people who ask these kinds of questions aren't running legit software, anyway. (and there aren't any real advantages to doing so, anyway, as the OS will most likely be supported at the next release, anyway)

Actually I was just trying to take a shortcut and not have to buy two sets of windows and install/toggle. I personally can not stand to use Windows XP vs Vista due to security and search related features at a minimum as well as using this same computer for gaming. I run a business from home and I have hobbies and looking forward to DX10. Since we are off the subject of help anyways I figured I would throw that in.

As with my other question your replies/questions and now advise so far has yielded nothing other than me being drawn to this forum due to reply notifications.

Catia works fine of Vista, I tested it thoroughly by actually using it in production and it does not have an issue except on my ASUS p5k with 8GB of memory, I just tested it on my Dell 390 with 8GB Vista everything works fine.

It is a stability issue with the memory, that is the issue at hand in case someone else runs into this. I will post furthur once problem is resolved.

engjeff - We run multiple Dell 690 with 16GB ram. On various projects I have peaked at the 12 GB mark without crashing. I will get the odd "click ok to terminate".

DBezaire thanks for the advise I do think I should just go buy a new machine. Do you recommend the Dell 690's or is their some other avenue to get faster single threaded performance?

Price and stability is the reason for the 690, started with 1 on trial from Dell. Bought 3 more a few months later.

I guess that's just the way it goes. As stated many times before, the advice is worth at least as much as what you paid for it.

I took the time to reply, to at least give you the advice. Have you taken any of your own personal time to help/advise/discuss anyone else's issues on this forum today? (ever?)

Actually I do read through the forums, I am new to Catia and look forward to being able to one day lend my advise back to this form. It all starts with a question...

Thank you DBezaire, I actually grabbed a 690 from my day job and everything loaded and worked great. Ordered one myself.

The issue with my home computer with Vista was ONLY the memory controller on the motherboard rather than compatibility with Vista. In my opinion Vista was more stable and less buggy. I have already had a product crash on a rebuild with the XP64 machine.
