ASQ offers a CRE (Certified Reliability Engineer) credential that I have heard mixed reviews about. On one hand, I was told it was worth exploring all the credentials within my given engineering field as a resume discriminator. On the other, I was told that any credential beyond the PE is not worth the effort.

Does anyone have any experience with this credential or have thoughts about its value? Any thoughts/help would be appreciated!

Here are some details about myself that may help direct the conversation:
1. I am a civilian Reliability Engineer for the DoD.
2. I have my PE certificate.
3. I have an MBA degree.

I'm not really sure what a PE brings to the table for a reliability engineer. Our reliablity engineer needs to understand electronics and mechanicals, so a single PE in one discipline seems to provide little benefit, particularly since our reliability engineers don't get to do design work, they only propose changes to the design engineers.

I've never heard of a CRE, so no comments on that, but if it's otherwise recognized, it would seem to be more appropos than the PE or the MBA, for that matter.

I think a reliability engineer needs to have extensive experience with design, manufacturing and quality. He would have optimally dealt with all of these aspects to truly oversee a process for reliability.

I know some reliability engineers who work primarily with engines, some with various machines while others work extensively with electronics. Their specific experience in those fields allows them to be the best engineer in those circumstances.

Those are just a few things to judge from...
