Where can I find documentation about valve end connections? I would like to understand better the terms: raised face flange, flat face flange, ring joint flange, welded, socket welded, union, grayloc and socket welded x threaded.
Also how do I know what kind of connection should I use depending on the application?

You may review vendor catalogues from reliable manufacturers. For flanges you may review ASME B16.5, and for socket welded / threaded ends ASME B16.11, and for butt welds ASME B16.25. For graylock or hubbed connections there are no standards. You should verify the manufacturers for those.

Succes.

I am a big fan of codes and standards. However, I recommend visiting a flange or valve warehouse. Pick up a 2-inch Class 600 Raised Face Weld Neck flange and feel the flange face. Compare against a flat face, Ring Type Joint, socket weld and other connections. I am a bigger fan of "full scale models".
