I'm trying to retrofit some old manual Grove gate valves (4" and 8") with some position limit switches. We only require the open and close position and nothing in between. These are manual valves and they do not require an accuator. There is a screw shaft that extends out of the handle when the valve is open and retracts when the valve is closed. Typically, I've seen these with a plexiglass cover to indicate position. In our case these covers are broken and no longer used. We are considering making some new covers with proximity switches installed to indicate position. It seems like there has got to be some off-the-shelf solution but the manufactures tell us to buy an accuator. Anyone have a solution?

Thanks in advance.

When it comes to mounting position switches, a lot of methods are used successfully, but the vendor may be suggesting that you have other problems with your valves. Gates are not meant to be cycled as on/off valves. The seats generally can't take it (leakage).

I think your solution of proximity sensors at each end of travel is the best you are going to get.

Two limit switches may be simplest depending on your controller or data acquisition system. You may also want to look at a cable-actuated displacement that provides easy installation and small size although it provides a proportional output and not just on/off. For details, look at
