We have specified an Eng-Air or Haakon custom AHU for an industrial project, but the contractor submitted a Venmar EnergyPack as an alternate. I'm unfamiliar with this manufacturer. Is it a recognized manufacturer and is it an equal to Eng-Air or Haakon? Any quality issues or concerns?

Thanks.

you have to look at the specs.. either manufacturer has many options.
i assume when you specified the eng-air you had specific qualities in mind? i guess go back to the reason to specify those brands int he first place and compare if the substitute is equal.

also depends on if the contract allows substitutes or if the contractor has to give you credit.

You are the Engineer.....is what is substituted equal to what you specified? If it is not, it is your job to require what is specified.

Haakon can be a pretty premium unit, depending on specs. I'd look really carefully at the components used in any substitute, perhaps insist on a shop tour to see their operation?

I understand that I need to look at the spec, etc etc. But using the same components, or meeting the same standards doesn't mean the unit is equally good due to workmanship, repair-ability, etc. What I'm hoping to get some first hand comment with this manufacturer, and whether anybody has had any good or bad experience with them.

Unfortunately, the shop is not located within driving distance, so a visit isn't going to be easy.

Why would you have to pay for a shop tour? The contractor is the one looking to save big bucks using an alternate. Maybe paying for airfare for you to qualify them will cause him to re-think??

Ask the contractor for references to a similar local installation that they have done.

Ask the contractor to ask Venmar for references to similar local installations by other contractors.

Follow-up on the references. Talk to the building engineer, talk to the maintenance guy.

Venmar doesn't show that they have much industrial process experience. Not clear if your application is comfort or process related.

Ask the contractor what the credit is for the substitution.

He have used and specified all three of them, Venmar is a good alternate. But you are the engineer, and I don't know what your client is expecting, they may have an existing servicing agreement with the other two manufacturers or have spare parts in stock for the other two, etc.
